#Showbiz: KLPAC String Orchestra enchants with anime and classical delights in November

KUALA LUMPUR: The magical world of Japanese animated movies will be brought to live through music by the KLPAC String Orchestra in the A Fantasy World: Anime x Classical concert at KLPAC's Pentas 2 from Nov 3 to 6.

Led by music director and resident conductor Andrea Sim, the 50-strong KLPAC String Orchestra will be presenting familiar tunes from Kiki's Delivery Service, Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbour Totoro and Castle In The Sky.

These are some of Japan's classic anime from the fertile mind of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli that are beloved around the world with the music scored mainly by composer Joe Hisaishi.

One of the highlights of the upcoming concert is the solo pianist, Maxy Chan, who will be performing two pieces, namely Sparkle from Your Name and Ashitaka And San from Princess Mononoke.

An ambassador for Kawai Malaysia, Chan made history when she became the first Malaysian to win Gold Awards at the prestigious Asia Piano Competition 2013 and 2014 which was held in Taiwan and South Korea, respectively.

The rising pianist is a familiar face in the festival circuit, having played at the 10th Penang Island Jazz Festival, 11th Johor Bahru Arts Festival and 22nd Kota Kinabalu MusicFestival among others.

Classical music lovers can also look forward to a selection of classics like Dvorak's Themes from New World Symphony, Rachmaninov's Vocalise and two sections from Mozart's Requiem in the upcoming concert offering them the best of both worlds.

"The KLPAC String Orchestra acts as an orchestral training ground for aspiring professionals, enthusiastic amateurs and students while exploring different types of repertoire such as classical string orchestra and plan to look east and highlight music from Malaysia and East Asia," said Sim in a recent statement from KLPAC.

She added: "We would love to perform for elderly and the less fortunate, as well as participate in exchanges with other orchestras."

Licensed by MACP and supported by Kawai Malaysia and Music Bliss, tickets for the show are priced at RM68.

Promotions include group bookings (Buy 10 and get 1 free ticket). Educators, students, the disabled and senior citizens are entitled for a 15 per cent off normal-priced tickets.
