#Showbiz: Kamal Chopra shines again at UK Bhangra Awards

SHE's a lawyer by profession, but Kamal Chopra follows the bhangra beat so well that she has again won the "Best International Artist Award" at the UK Bhangra Awards, this time for 2022.

The bubbly singer beat entries from Denmark, India, Japan, the Netherlands, Canada and Australia to snatch the prize, which she last won in 2019.

The UK Bhangra Awards has been held annually in Birmingham since 2014, drawing good response from around the world.

"It is not actually a contest. The UK Bhangra Awards is a red carpet family event... with a worldwide audience.

"It seeks to unveil the best artistic talent by nominating artistes based on work, performances and endorsement of the Punjabi culture and bhangra throughout the year. It is open to public voting.

"Receiving an award is truly an honour and one of the highest accolades for the recipients, as they have been fairly voted winners by the public.

"No words are enough to describe the feelings in your heart when you know you have brought so much honour to your family, community, state and country," says Kamal in an email interview.

The Selangor-born Kamal, who now lives in Penang with husband Dr Sunil Chopra, and her brood of 3 sons, credits her win to her fans.

"I couldn't have done it without them. I'm really touched by the love and enthusiasm they've shown in helping me win this award by taking the time and effort to vote for me, and to support me in my journey to promote bhangra, Punjabi culture and the unity of all communities worldwide.

"This achievement is not just mine, but theirs too."

Not one to rest on her laurels, Kamal has her own YouTube channel and has performed at various events locally as well as abroad.

"I have also released three original songs to date — Khwaab, Jhanjhran and Shadaa — and I am currently working on releasing five more original pieces in collaboration with music producers in India and the UK," says Kamal, a glamorous-looking woman who sings in Spanish, Chinese and Tamil as well.

She says coming up with her own bhangra numbers stemmed from being awarded "Best International Artist Award" in 2019, when she beat nominees from the United States, Canada, Sweden, India and Dubai.

"That achievement had a far-reaching impact on my career as an artiste/singer and inspired me to connect and collaborate with music producers from other countries to take my career a step further by producing original songs."

She says she hopes to release her album by end of this year.

"Winning the award again in 2022 has inspired me to go even further. I hope to be able to break into Bollywood some day."

Kamal is also the lead singer of a six-piece rock band in Penang called Vintage Rising.

She is currently one of the panel members of Youth with Rhythm in Penang, which aims to uncover and develop fresh talent.

Expect only more recognition for Kamal, who recently performed at the Asian Dance Festival 2022 in Britain, alongside other popular artistes and performers.
