KUALA LUMPUR: Veteran singer Rohana Jalil needs constant monitoring from doctors at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM) Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Cheras, as germs have infected her vital organs.
The 68-year-old singer's manager identified only as Jepun said that Rohana was in stable condition but she remained weak as her intestinal perforation had yet to heal.
"Doctors cannot do anything at the moment as she is very weak. She cannot eat and drink and is dependent on antibiotics," said Jepun in a news report today.
Jepun also said that Rohana was no longer in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital as its machines could no longer treat her.
"Doctors told me that germs have spread to her lungs and kidneys. They fear that her heart could stop beating any time."
Jepun added that Rohana underwent bariatric surgery two years ago for a gastric problem, but she developed intestinal perforation later.
"They did not inform us about this until it was too late. They gave her antibiotics but did not refer her to specialists."
Jepun said that Rohana's family members initially declined to receive visitors, but they have now decided otherwise.
Rohana was admitted to HCTM on April 18 and underwent surgery the following day. She was transferred to the hospital's high-dependency unit (HDU) five days later.
Her condition further improved on May 14, when she was transferred to a normal ward.
