#SHOWBIZ: P Ramlee-era nostalgia in Ramli Ibrahim's contemporary dance production

KUALA LUMPUR: Sutra Foundation will be staging the triple bill contemporary modern dance production, Malam Bulan di Pagar Bintang, at PJPAC in Bandar Utama, Selangor from tomorrow until Aug 4.

Conceived and choreographed by Datuk Ramli Ibrahim, the three dance pieces will be something different in a while for Sutra, which has come to be associated with Indian clasical dance.

Malam Bulan di Pagar Bintang continues to explore Malaysian contemporary modern dance genre as an important aspect in the rich tapestry of Malaysian dance.

Revelling takes its cue from Balinese dances and the gamelan, while Stand by me is inspired by Greek poetry exploring the themes of human relationship of love, the coming of age, aging and separation.

The titular work, Malam Bulan di Pagar Bintang, is inspired by the old film recordings sung mainly by P Ramlee, Saloma and Normadiah.

The eclectic choreography, like those classic songs, evoke the romantic nostalgia of a bygone era.

"This may be a surprise to some, that while Sutra has been mainly associated with Indian classical dance, we have also been responsible in catalysing the interest in contemporary modern dance in Malaysia," said Ramli in a recent statement.

"Forty years ago in 1984, I had presented a triple bill titled Pandanglah! Lihatlah! – similarly costumed on a black and white theme, then designed by our first costume designer, the late Prof Najib Nor of UiTM.

"Pandanglah! Lihatlah! was premiered with the late actor, Mustafa Nor, in the old Experimental Theatre of University Malaya.

"In many ways, this triple bill of Malam Bulan di Pagar Bintang is an evocation of the wonderful memories of this previous production," he said.

The 100-minute Malam Bulan di Pagar Bintang will feature Sutra artistes Rathimalar, Geethika Sree, Tan Mei Mei, Nishah Govind Kumar, Renuka, Vanizha, Nithya, Jyotsnaa, Rucika, Tishaa, Deepaa, Aishwaryaa, Vaishnavi, Kaaviyashri, Harenthiran, Vickneshwaran, Jayden Roy, Hareen Loganathan, Nevin Kumar and Barath.
