AFTER almost a decade of being in the Malaysian music industry, singer-songwriter Syamel is happy to explore new genres and perspectives to keep his musical output fresh.
With his latest single, 'Hamba Cinta', the 30-year-old pop artiste delves into rhythmic jazz to offer something a little out of the ordinary.
Syamel, whose real name is Syameel Aqmal Mohd Fodzly, is thankful that the track, which was released recently, has been well received.
He sees it as a sign that he's on the right track in choosing a different direction.
To offer something unique and to show that music has endless possibilities, Syamel feels that anyone can "explore a new potential and find fulfilment in the creative process."
"As a singer, I want variety in my repertoire, especially when performing.
"I don't want to limit myself to only slow-tempo songs or ballads.
"When it comes to music, diversity is very important. Music should be experienced with all the senses.
"Hopefully, people will continue to enjoy 'Hamba Cinta'."
The father of one adds that the essence of this new work comes from a heartfelt story of a relationship.
"One's love and sacrifices are ultimately destroyed by betrayal which leads to shattered trust, as it often happens to many couples.
"In the end, the love that was built becomes worthless, and the two no longer want to be slaves to such a relationship."
Syamel, along with Yusuff Khan, Adam Armi, and Adly Kiddy, apparently made many changes during the creative process for this particular song.
Although this was their first collaboration, it was done in a way to ensure that the final result satisfied everyone involved behind the scenes.
'Hamba Cinta' marks the beginning of a major transition in Syamel's artistic journey, as he and Warner Music Malaysia are already planning to release a full album to showcase this change.
The songs that will be included in the album consist of various genres such as pop rock, R&B, jazz pop as well as ballads that have been his forte since he started his artistic career.
As an artiste, the changes reflect his maturity and willingness to explore new facets before releasing a full album scheduled for next year.
"Besides promoting 'Hamba Cinta', I'm also focused on gathering new material for the album. It all takes time and I don't want to rush the release without proper preparation.
"I am happy because the recording company has given me the freedom to create, and many variations will be introduced to ensure fans are satisfied with the new version that will be released later," he said.
While looking forward to changes, Syamel maintains that ballads will remain as he understands that most fans still find satisfaction in that genre and he is happy to fulfil their wishes.
Another bold approach is a dangdut version of 'Hamba Cinta' which was created to meet current trends.
While it has not been officially released yet, this version showcases another side of Syamel.
"The idea to produce a dangdut version came from observing trends on TikTok. I wanted fans to listen to and enjoy this song while dancing.
"Seeing many similar versions receiving positive responses, I took the initiative to create one myself.
"I hope the fans will enjoy the dangdut version when it is released."
The KL-born artiste also teased about plans to hold a solo concert as a thank-you gesture to loyal fans who have supported his artistic career over the years.
