'Abang Adik' director Jin Ong expressed his excitement and gratitude following the film's recent selection for the International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.
He described it as a major achievement in his career.
While Jin remains cautiously optimistic, he acknowledges that it's still too early to predict the outcome.
"I'm truly happy and excited that my film has been submitted. It's an honour to represent Malaysia. I want to thank Finas (the National Film Development Corporation), my team and the cast for their unwavering support," he told 'Harian Metro'.
Although Jin remains grounded, he dreams of 'Abang Adik' securing an Oscar nomination.
"The Oscars are the highest recognition in the world of film. Naturally, I hope we are given that chance. But for now, we're taking it one step at a time," he said, emphasising the importance of moving forward.
Finas selected 'Abang Adik' after rigorous evaluations by its Film Selection Committee, which consists of industry professionals.
The decision also adhered to the requirements set by the Academy.
'Abang Adik' made waves last year, grossing RM14.6 million in Taiwan and RM1.55 million in Hong Kong, making it the first Malaysian film to achieve such success in international markets.
Domestically, the film earned RM5.7 million following its release in December.
The film tells the poignant story of two orphans, played by Jack Tan and Taiwanese actor Wu Kang Ren, as they navigate life without proper documentation in Pudu, Kuala Lumpur — an area known for its bustling wet markets.
