THE Film Directors Association of Malaysia (FDAM), in collaboration with the National Film Development Corporation (Finas), successfully hosted the 2024 FDAM Amateur Director Incubator Programme at Finas in Hulu Klang, Selangor.
With enthusiastic participation from 30 amateur directors, the seven-day workshop aimed to offer hands-on industry exposure and practical knowledge to aspiring filmmakers.
FDAM and Finas hope to make this programme an annual event to support emerging talent.
Finas chief executive officer Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib emphasised the programme's role in shaping Malaysia's next generation of filmmakers.
"We're proud to see the dedication and energy from each participant.
"Entering the world of directing is challenging, especially in today's competitive industry, but the commitment shown by participants has been impressive," he said.
"Finas believes that grassroots talent will be the backbone of our industry's future.
"Through funding, networking and development programmes, we're committed to creating platforms for emerging directors to explore their potential."
Azmir added that the Malaysian film industry is dynamic and full of opportunities, but it requires visionary directors who are bold enough to innovate and engage global audiences.
Fifteen standout participants of the programme have been invited to the 33rd Malaysian Film Festival in December, where they will have the opportunity to network and showcase their skills.
FDAM chairman Datuk Afdlin Shauki expressed pride in the workshop's success.
"This workshop provided participants with essential skills to advance in the world of directing. It's the first step towards achieving greater success," he said
Afdlin highlighted the positive feedback received, with participants requesting extended sessions and even intermediate workshops.
"Our facilitators have been patient and dedicated, providing not only theoretical knowledge, but also invaluable practical insights."
He hoped that the initiative will inspire a new generation of directors who prioritise creativity, integrity and professionalism.
The programme also helped many amateur directors register under the Malaysian Creative Capacity Enhancement Programme.
Programme facilitators included industry veterans Afdlin, Sofea J Rhyland, Capt Khir Mohd Noor, Fairuz Loy, Heykal Hanafiah, Roslainur Roslan and Faizul A. Rashid.
