Tried & tested: Joey Mattress

A mattress by a new local brand gives Aref Omar restful slumber.

IN today’s fast-paced world many people strive to live healthy by eating right and exercising. But a growing number of people have also come to realise that getting a good night’s sleep is another very important aspect that contributes to healthy living.

Choosing the right mattress to indulge in restful slumber may be a confusing process. There’s a whole host of brands, models and materials to consider before getting to the quality shut-eye that consists of four sleep cycles a night.

Adding to the stress is the cost of a typical premium slab of slumber heaven which can easily spiral upwards into a five-figure price tag. But a new mattress brand is planning to buck the trend and offer a hassle-free experience of owning an affordable and good product.

TESTING IT OUT

Joey Mattress sells its mattresses online and I got to test it out for a month.

Delivery was fuss-free and there’s no additional cost for buyers. The odourless queen-sized mattress was light and good to use right out of the plastic wrap.

There was no adjustment period for me since it felt alright from the first time I lay down on it. Over the weeks, the fully foam mattress, made out of a unique polyurethane dubbed J-Foam, was comfortable and I had good and undisturbed sleep.

The breathable material made the sleeping surface cool as well, which added to overall comfort. With a medium firm feel, the mattress also features a Zero-Motion Transfer technology that isolates movements, so my wife’s turns and rolls did not transfer over to my side of the bed.

We also tested it with my 5-year-old daughter jumping on one side and she was not able to topple her standing milk bottle on the other side.

According to Joey Mattress founder Winson Chong, the mattress has two layers. The top is 8cm and it’s a soft and bouncy comfort layer with pressure-relief characteristics. The bottom is 15cm and provides firm support for the spine. The top cover comprises of 68 per cent polyester and 32 per cent viscose.

The Joey Mattress price ranges from RM1,250 (single), RM1,895 (queen) and RM2,395 (king) and comes with a 10-year guarantee.

Customers can try it out for 99 days and if you don’t like it, just return it and get a full refund, no questions asked. Chong said that mattresses returned by customers will be donated to charities. If no charity takes them, then the company will dispose off the unwanted mattresses. He adds that so far no one has returned any Joey Mattress.

ENGINEERED FOAM

The company has been in operation for the past nine months. Talking about his competition and business model, Chong says: “I consider Sonno one of my direct competitors because we both sell mattresses on the Internet.

“However, I believe Joey Mattress has a different business model than Sonno because we engineer our own foam which is used to make the Joey. Our mattresses are designed and manufactured ourselves in Malaysia and then delivered directly from factory to the customers in Malaysia. This vertical integration with the supply chain helps us make very high quality mattresses while keeping the cost affordable.”

Bottom line, it’s a good mattress that’s affordable. And it’s made in Malaysia. So if you want to support a local brand that is putting out a great product for you to comfortably rest on, give Joey Mattress a try.
