PLANT-based milks have been around for a long time. Previously, they were relegated to specialty grocery stores or health food stores as an alternative to dairy milk, especially for those with strict dietary concerns.
However, as interest and demand for them continues to grow — boosted by consumers seeking cleaner, healthier lifestyles such as veganism and a desire to lower their impact on the environment, these alternative milks have become highly popular.
Data gathered by Transparency Market Research shows that the dairy alternative market in the Asia-Pacific region is anticipated to reach a value of US$19.8 billion by 2031.
"People are more carefully managing their eating and drinking habits to bring a feeling of control to their lives, enabling them to improve their physical health and mental wellbeing," says Tetra Pak marketing director for Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Philippines, John Jose.
As such, it is no surprise that many consumers are turning to plant-based milks as they carry a wide range of health and nutritional benefits.
MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE
Jose explains that when choosing between milk substitutes, the rule of thumb is to pick one that suits your lifestyle, preferences and nutritional goals.
While there are many similarities between oat, soy and almond milk, the nutritional profile of each is quite different.
For example, soy milk provides a good source of protein and contains all the essential amino acids. This makes it a great option for those who follow a vegan diet or are lactose intolerant.
Soy milk is lactose-free and manufactured from soybeans. It's abundant in calcium and potassium and contains vitamins A, B-12 and D.
"Soy milk can be used as a dairy alternative since it contains the same amount of protein as cow's milk," says Jose.
On the other hand, almond milk is produced from pulverised almonds and water and is also lactose and dairy-free.
With a sweet, nutty flavour, it contains a high level of calcium, magnesium and vitamin E, which is important for our immune system and blood vessels.
Some studies have shown a link between high vitamin E intake and a lower risk of cognitive conditions like Alzheimer's disease.
Another popular plant-based milk is oat milk, which is a great source of fibre and has been shown to lower cholesterol levels and improve heart health. It is mild with a creamy flavour, making it good to pair with cereals, hot beverages or to be drunk on its own.
Oat milk is an ideal option for people with nut allergies who can't consume almond milk.
