IT's easy to binge on unhealthy food when you are stuck at home-- especially when you have stocked up on chips and chocolates on your last weekly grocery shopping. And while we all know what excess sugar does to our health and well-being, being disciplined and eating well when you need to stay in isn't something easy to do.
With a greater focus into wellness and healthy eating, food places are offering sweet treats that are no longer solely high on calories with no nutrition. And even if you are into cakes and pies, some outlets take into account portion, so you can indulge into something satisfying that doesn't come in a ridiculously huge slice.
Here are four outlets under the airasia food stable that may just satisfy your sugar craving.
DAO
INSTAGRAM @dao.desserts
LOCATION Various spots in the Klang Valley
Dáo specialises in soy-based desserts, serving traditional desserts with a twist, offering familiar flavours that surprise your tastebuds.
I like its daofufah, or tau fu fah. It's light and smooth and Dáo serves it with tong yuen, or little balls made of glutinous rice that provides a different texture to the dish. It is served with brown sugar syrup, or gula merah, which is easily found where tau fu fah is sold.
But there's also the ginger syrup variety that makes for an interesting sweetener.
The black soy milk drink is also a nice thirst quencher, neither too sweet nor too dense.
SUGAR AND I
@sugarandi
LOCATION SS14/1, Subang Jaya
Except for the cinnamon rolls which I think are thick and big, Sugar And I's creations are regular in size, which I appreciate. It helps people like me portion control their food.
The outlet makes "custom cakes, cookies, and yummy brownies to create beautiful and delicious sugar creations for people to enjoy,"
Its cream puff has a crusty exterior, but the puff is soft and the vanilla cream is delicious without being too sweet. I love the bomboloni, which I think is basically round doughnut with filling. It is soft and the filling is generous.
I refrigerate the extras and bring them out an hour or so before I eat them and they taste just as good after two days.
The cinnamon rolls are tasty too, but the sizes are too big for my liking. The Salted Caramel Walnut Brownies are great, in little squares that is just enough to satiate your sweet tooth after a meal.
AVOCADIAN
@avocadian.my
LOCATION SS15, Subang Jaya, Damansara Uptown and Bangsar
If you like avocado, then this should be your go-to avo shop, given that it serves a wide range of avocado delights from mini tarts to shakes to puree. The brand says it wants to improve its customers' life through avocado and this philosophy is translated in its product line-up.
My favourite is AvoDates, a break-of-fast partner that will instantly fill you with good nutrition without making you overeat. Many Muslims fast throughout the year and if you want to get a quick buka puasa opener, this is the one.
There's also AvoShake, made with organic soy milk and AvoBerry with fresh milk. Its drinks are made without adding sugar so don't think that these shakes have the sweetness of a milkshake. You might want to add in sugar syrup to sweeten it.
Avocadian also makes avocado puree which you can enjoy daily. It's packed in little sachets so you can take one at the start of the day for 30 days. I have not tried adding it to smoothies but from the texture, I think you can do exactly that.
GA GA CAKES
@gagacakes.kl
LOCATION Seventeen Mall, Section 17, Petaling Jaya
Ga Ga Cakes sells a variety of pastries and desserts, including hojicha creme brulee and lemon cream tart. It's a little store in the mall that you might want to visit with friends for coffee and cakes once this lockdown eases and dine-in is allowed again.
The Pecan Coffee Tart is an interesting tart with crushed pecan instead of whole, roasted ones that I am accustomed to. This one is not sweet, but bitter. It takes quite a few bites to get used to the taste.
The Pistachio Paris Brest has a delightful pistachio cream in-between the pastry. The cream isn't sweet, and the pistachio taste is not compromised.
