TAPAH: A restaurant owner in Tapah Road is offering kampung durians for as low as RM3 per kilogramme during the harvest season, making the king of fruits more affordable for locals and visitors.
According to Kosmo!, Mohd Kairul Azhar Mohd Shuhaimi, 40, sources his durians directly from nearby orchards in Langkap and Chenderiang.
He provides three pricing tiers — RM3, RM6, and RM10 per kilogramme — ensuring a variety of options for his customers.
"The RM3 durians are usually reserved for our regular patrons and often served as complimentary desserts. These kampung durians, with their golden flesh, rival the premium varieties," he said.
A father of four, Mohd Kairul has been in the durian trade for seven years, previously supplying to the Selayang Wholesale Market.
Now, he focuses on his restaurant while offering durians as a seasonal treat.
He said there had been significant changes in durian farming patterns, adding that trees now bore fruit three to four times a year — a phenomenon he attributes to climate change.
The increased yield, coupled with a growing preference for affordable kampung durians, had opened up new opportunities for small-scale vendors, Mohd Kairul added.
