IN a groundbreaking collaboration, the Forest Interactive Foundation has joined forces with the Axiata Foundation to introduce an exciting initiative known as the Green Bean programme.
This visionary project, which was unveiled in September, aims to provide a holistic environmental education experience that will ignite the passion of the next generation of eco-warriors.
Spearheaded by the Axiata Foundation's sponsorship, this pioneering endeavour took root in four primary schools nestled within the vibrant heart of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor — SK Datok Keramat 2, SK Cheras Jaya, SK Kantan Permai, and SK Taman Segar.
These institutions hosted 30 students, aged between 10 and 12 years old, each one of them embarking on a transformative two-day journey into the world of environmental education. This endeavour marks a pivotal step in nurturing a profound commitment to environmental conservation among the emerging leaders of tomorrow.
With the urgent need to combat climate change and its far-reaching impacts, the Forest Interactive Foundation and Axiata Foundation have set their sights on equipping these young learners with the knowledge, skills, and passion needed to become the guardians of our precious environment.
EMPOWERING YOUNG MINDS
"Environmental education starts from an early age," remarks Johary Mustapha, the founder and chief executive officer of Forest Interactive Foundation. Adding, he says: "Without this fundamental education, our future leaders are unable to grasp what's needed from the beginning of their school life and develop this into their mature adult life. These initiatives are very important for kids so they can see what sort of changes they can have in terms of preserving the environment for a better tomorrow."
To nurture and cultivate the budding eco-warriors of the future, the Green Bean programme's first day was an interesting blend of classroom teachings and immersive outdoor adventures, centred around four key modules:
Environmental Science 101: This module featured a hands-on project where students built their own solar panel cars, allowing them to witness the marvels of renewable energy in action.
Environmental Issues 101: Students delved deep into the complexities of climate issues and challenges, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the environmental threats our world faces.
Sustainability 101: This module introduced concepts like "Grow Your Own Food" and the circular economy, engaging students in the "Green Bean Innovation Challenge", igniting their creativity and innovation.
Environmental Advocacy: The programme culminated in a pledge to safeguard the environment, inspiring a sense of responsibility and ownership among the young participants.
As an extension of the Environmental Advocacy module, the programme's second day took the students to the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS), an outing that proved to be an inspiring experience.
Here, the children had the privilege of immersing themselves in the wonders of nature, connecting with various animals, and exploring vegetable and herb gardens, as well as stingless bee and animal farms.
The highlight of their journey was the chance to pitch their creative ideas for advancing sustainable living to a panel of judges comprising representatives from the Forest Interactive Foundation, Axiata Foundation, and their respective school teachers.
FORGING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
"Implementing a programme like Green Bean among school children is essential because it helps develop their understanding of the environment and ecological balance," emphasises Mohamad Kamal Nawawi, chief executive officer of Axiata Foundation.
He continues: "By introducing them to the impact of human activities on the environment, we can create awareness and a sense of urgency regarding environmental degradation. By nurturing their passion for the environment and inspiring them to take action, we can build a better future for our planet."
Looking ahead, Johary expresses the hope of fostering more partnerships in the years to come, building upon the resounding success of this programme. By joining forces, they aim to take urgent action in expanding knowledge and capacity to combat climate change.
In a powerful testament to their shared commitment, the Green Bean programme aligns seamlessly with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 — Quality Education, 13 — Climate Action, and 17 — Partnership for the Goals.
Together, the Forest Interactive Foundation and Axiata Foundation are nurturing a greener, more sustainable future, one inspired young mind at a time.
