AS I step onto the soft, powdery sands of Pangkor Laut Resort in Perak, I'm enveloped by the fragrance of the lush rainforest mingling with the salty sea breeze. This secluded island paradise, a hidden gem off the coast of Malaysia, isn't just a beautiful escape; it's a living canvas where music and nature collide in the most exquisite harmony.
I'm here for the much-anticipated second edition of Opera in Paradise, an event that transforms this idyllic locale into a sanctuary for some of the world's finest musical talents.
The excitement in the air is palpable. Just moments ago, I was leisurely sipping a refreshing mocktail at Fisherman's Cove, one of two fine dining restaurants at the resort, admiring the magical vista of the seascape in front of me. It's certainly the perfect prelude to what promises to be an unforgettable evening.
The resort, with its motto of "One island, One resort," embodies a philosophy that merges luxury with the breathtaking beauty of a two-million-year-old rainforest. Suffice to say, this year's lineup is nothing short of stellar.
CAPTIVATING SHOWCASE
Headlining the show are award-winning Italian Andrea Griminelli, a flautist whose artistry transcends the ordinary; Cathy-Di Zhang, beautiful award-winning Australian soprano with a voice that can lift souls; and Scottish-born Australian John Longmuir, a tenor with truly powerful pipes!
I duly learn that award-winning English mezzo soprano Laura Wright — someone whom I'd be looking forward to catch — couldn't make it due to a family emergency. Fortunately, Griminelli, Zhang and Longmuir are able to adapt seamlessly, their chemistry palpable as they take to the stage at Samudra, the concert venue with awe-inspiring 360-degree views.
As the evening begins, the air is discernibly thick with anticipation. I find myself lost in the moment, transfixed, allowing the music to wash over me, as the distant sound from a low flying hornbill meld with that of gently lapping waves.
REMEMBERING THE MAESTRO
The spirit of Luciano Pavarotti lingers in this paradise. It was here, back in 1994, that the legendary tenor delivered a semi-private performance that would forever etch Pangkor Laut Resort into the annals of musical history.
I can't help but recall Pavarotti's words, when he expressed his deep connection to this land: "This place is enchanting. It is paradise here," he'd declared. Those sentiments resonate even more as I witness the stunning performances unfolding before me.
Tonight isn't just a concert; it's a homage to the past and a celebration of the present. Griminelli, Zhang, and Longmuir embody the spirit of the maestro, whose dedication of O Paradiso to this resort still echoes in its halls.
The memory of the suite named after him, perched above the lush canopy, evokes a sense of reverence; it's a reminder of the powerful impact music can have in such a breathtaking setting.
As the final notes from Puccini's Nessun Dorma — sung with so much gusto by Longmuir — linger in the air, a wave of exhilaration sweeps through the enraptured audience, culminating in a standing ovation that feels like an unending embrace.
The performers, beaming with joy, take the stage once more for an encore, and I can't help but feel a part of something greater — an experience that transcends time and place.
Dinner follows, an elegant feast inspired by Pavarotti himself, where guests got to mingle with the artists. I sit amidst fellow music lovers, our conversation flowing like the melodies we've just witnessed.
The jovial and spirited Datuk Mark Yeoh, executive director of YTL Hotels, rises amidst clinking glasses and proceeds to deliver a heartfelt speech, expressing gratitude for the collective effort that brought this event to life.
As the night deepens, I reflect on the magic that has unfolded here on this balmy night. The Opera in Paradise has not only showcased extraordinary talent, but also reaffirmed Pangkor Laut Resort's status as a sanctuary of beauty and culture.
As I make my way back to my room, the rousing strains of Nessun Dorma still ringing in my ears, a comforting peace washes over me. I feel like I haven't just attended a concert; I've been part of something special, where the magic of music and the beauty of this paradise have come together in perfect harmony.
The third edition of Opera in Paradise is scheduled for Oct 24 to Oct 26, 2025. For more info, email travelcentre@ytlhotels.com.
