BMW Malaysia to strengthen EV-ready workforce through certification programme

KUALA LUMPUR: BMW Group Malaysia will be using its internationally-recognised BMW High Voltage Expert Certification programme to cultivate highly skilled experts in the field of electric mobility.

The introduction of the certification aims to enhance the electric vehicle (EV) landscape in Malaysia with a wide network of charging infrastructure and complement the uptake of electromobility since the arrival of the latest BMW i vehicles earlier this year.

BMW Group Malaysia managing director Hans de Visser said that there is a crucial need for qualified experts in the field of electric mobility to go along with the support of its network of dealership.

This is part of the brand's preparation for electrification and introduction of BMW i in the country, and to ensure that its owners have greater peace of mind when it comes to the ownership of their electric vehicles.

He added that the company remains committed to nurturing more local talents with high-level expertise that are recognised internationally.

"We have always believed that the future is electric at the BMW Group and have been working hard to that end, having envisioned a Malaysia where electric mobility is fully embraced since the BMW i was first introduced to the country back in 2015.

"We understood the obstacles faced by Malaysians in adopting EVs. Such as range anxiety which we have been alleviating by rolling out EV infrastructure across the country, and service and repair which are also important points of consideration," he added.

Greater accessibility to BMW certified experts is said to ensure that the German automaker's premium electric ownership experience is met at the highest standards for all of its BMW i vehicles as more are being introduced on Malaysian roads.

To that end de Visser says the certification is an important pillar for BMW Group Malaysia in supporting the development of a mature ecosystem in the country where EVs can thrive.

A certified BMW High Voltage Expert is a specialised talent who is allowed to service and repair the most advanced BMW i vehicles worldwide.

The prospect must already be an existing BMW High Voltage Technician to qualify, who would have first undergone a pre-selection process which includes a knowledge assessment and an interview.

The prospect would also need to obtain first aid certification and undergo a full body check-up. After which, they are then put through 15 days of intensive training, with the requirement of passing two theory exams and four practical exams to proceed to the next stage.

This is followed by a final theory exam and practical demonstration under live high voltage to secure the certification which is completed in another 10 days.

The programme will be conducted at the BMW Group Regional Training Centre in Malaysia.
