SEREMBAN: All electric vehicles (EVs) across the country will eventually be issued special number plates beginning with 'EV' followed by the registered number and so forth (e.g., EV1, EV2).
Speaking during the grand opening of Great Wall Motor Malaysia's (GWM) new 4S Centre in Seremban, Transport Minister Anthony Loke also mentioned that the road tax pricing structure for EVs will also undergo a thorough review.
"My ministry will review the formula and make it (EV road tax) lower and more competitive (than non-EVs) so that people will not hesitate to buy EVs," he said, acknowledging concerns regarding the potential increase in road tax for EVs after the current exemption policy expires in 2025.
He explains that the ministry plans to provide clear and transparent information about how the road tax will be calculated, offering direct answers to potential buyers soon.
Further emphasizing on their commitment to a greener future, Loke also said that the government is looking to also ensure the safety of EV management (both in terms of accident handling and implementing safety measures) and further growth of the local production industry (to assemble and manufacture EVs domestically in Malaysia, including producing the car batteries locally).
He further assures that the government intends to align its the policies with the goal of promoting EV adoption in Malaysia as part of its sustainability objectives.
The special number plates are also said to incorporate RFID technology as an additional feature.
No specific timeline was given when will these initiatives be implemented.
