KUCHING: The integration of hydrogen as a clean and renewable energy source in powering the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project is one of the key initiatives to transform the Sarawak transport sector.
Sarawak Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the the integration of hydrogen-powered vehicles in KUTS is a tangible step towards promoting sustainable mobility within the urban centres.
"In addition to hydrogen, we are also exploring other innovative solutions to make our transport sector more sustainable," he said when winding-up for his ministry at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly here, today.
He said initiatives such as promoting electric vehicles, enhancing public transport infrastructure and implementing smart mobility solutions are all part of our comprehensive strategy.
"My ministry is also exploring initiatives for the riverine transport sector to transition to green energy vessels with consideration of hydrogen or electric-powered propulsion systems.
Lee said Sarawak had contributed to Malaysia's recognition for its strides in energy transition, ranking as the leading country in Southeast Asia according to the Energy Transition Index 2023 by the World Economic Forum.
"Sarawak is playing a significant role in contributing to this initiative and leading in harnessing the potential of hydrogen as a clean and renewable energy source. It is important to highlight the crucial role of transport in this endeavour," he added.
