Explain RM2.5b deal, Anwar told

KUALA LUMPUR: A PKR grassroots leader has urged Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to clarify whether he had instructed Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim to acquire Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sungai Selangor Sdn Bhd (Splash) for RM2.5 billion.

Kapar PKR branch committee member Hanisya Abd Hamid yesterday said it was odd for the Selangor government to purchase the water concessionaire at that price as it was worth only RM250 million.

She also called on the opposition leader to respond to claims that Khalid’s intended removal as menteri besar was due to his dealings with the Federal Government on the restructuring of the state’s water supply and distribution industry.

“Khalid has recently signed a heads of agreement (HoA) with the Federal Government and ensured that the people will be able to have water supply at a cheap price.

“However, has his achievement caused uneasiness among certain corporate figures, who do not welcome the signing of this agreement?”

Hanisya said it was possible
that the corporate figures in question had approached Anwar and offered to “sponsor” Khalid’s removal from the post of Selangor menteri besar.

On Friday, the Selangor and Federal Governments signed a HoA on the restructuring of the state’s water supply and distribution industry.

The move will allow Selangor to pay only RM7.65 billion to Puncak Niaga Holdings Bhd, Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas), Syarikat Pengeluar
Air Sungai Selangor Sdn Bhd (Splash) and Konsortium Abass Sdn Bhd.

Of the four, Splash remains the only one that has yet to strike a deal with the Federal and Selangor governments.
