CAIRO: Putera 1Malaysia Club president Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Azeez yesterday described their humanitarian mission to Gaza as a success. He said although only three of the 85 members of the Malaysian mission were permitted to enter Gaza, they managed to hand over food supplies and medicine to the people there.
“Alhamdulillah, 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid were successfully channelled to the Palestinians through the mission.”
He added that Malaysia would continue to aid Palestinians in their hour of need. They would do this by bringing back 100 Palestinians for treatment. Speaking here, he thanked the Egyptian government for their cooperation in making the mission a success.
Azeez, Malaysian ambassador to Egypt and Palestine Datuk Ku Jaafar Ku Shaari and Palestinian ambassador to Malaysia Dr Anwar Al Agha were three people allowed to enter Gaza on Monday.
Recalling the mission, Azeez said they were lucky to have survived an incident when a bomb dropped in Rafah had failed to explode.
He said the trio had kept their fingers crossed and also vowed to work fast throughout the time they were in Gaza.
Dr Anwar, who came from Khan Younis, said the Malaysian mission had proved that Malaysia would stand by the Palestinians at all times.
“Thank you to the government and people of Malaysia, as well as all the non-governmental organisations that are in this together to help those effected.”
Monday’s mission involved three NGOs — Mercy Malaysia, the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations and Putera 1Malaysia Club — and was conducted with the coordination of the Malaysian embassy here. More than 2,000 Palestinians had been killed, mostly civilians, with more than 400,000 made homeless by the war between Israel and Palestine.
