HULU SELANGOR: J.C. Jacobsen Foundation, the charity outreach arm of Carlsberg Malaysia, organised a clean-up of the area around Sungai Liam waterfall recently.
The Love Our Waterfall project, involving 80 volunteers, was held in conjunction with the 203th birthday of Carlsberg founder J.C. Jacobsen on Sept 2.
It was carried out in partnership with Do Something Good and Pertubuhan Pencinta Air Terjun Selangor (PPATS).
Carlsberg Malaysia corporate communications and corporate social responsibility director Pearl Lai said RM15,000 had been spent to repaint an abandoned building, build a pavilion for visitors, provide additional rubbish bins and beautify the waterfall area.
Lai said the programme was in line with Jacobsen’s philanthropic spirit and his belief in the importance of environmental sustainability.
“Continuing his legacy, we place great emphasis on water conservation at the brewery and take a proactive stand.
“We hope to come up with new ways to achieve the foundation’s aspiration of brewing a greener future.”
PPATS chairman Herbert Effendi Wong Abdullah said he was grateful for the volunteers’ contributions and support.
He said the waterfall had the potential to become a great tourist spot in the future.
“The waterfall is accessible from the parking area.
“We are planning to upgrade the abandoned building. We hope the waterfall will attract more visitors in the future.”
Volunteer Yip Wei Lun, 21, said he wanted to help to protect the environment.
“I hope that more people will be interested to spare their time and do something good to save Mother Nature.”
The foundation has recruited the area’s Orang Asli community to build the pavilion and serve as “rangers” for the area.
Volunteers were also treated to tapioca cooked in bamboo and sup gulai ayam semomok prepared by the Orang Asli.
