SHAH ALAM: Gerakan delegates have unanimously agreed to the setting up of a national disciplinary committee to help curb cases of internal party sabotage.
Party disciplinary and constitution bureau chairman Tan Sri Dr Chin Fook Weng yesterday said the decision to set up the committee was made after cases of sabotage during last year’s general election surfaced.
“In the 13th General Election, several cases of sabotage had occurred but no action was taken against the perpetrators,” he said when presenting Gerakan’s plans to amend the party’s constitution at its 43rd National Delegates Conference here.
He said the need to set up the committee only arose recently as the number of disciplinary cases in Gerakan were fewer in the past.
Chin said the committee would consist of one chairman, one deputy chairman, and three members.
“All the members will be appointed by the party’s central working committee (CWC) and will serve for a maximum of three years,” he said, adding that only Gerakan life members were eligible for the posts.
“Life members are party veterans who have retired and no longer take an active part in politics. It is hoped that they will be able to make fair judgments without fear or favour,” he said.
Chin, however, said the committee could only make recommendations to the CWC when deliberating a disciplinary case.
“It cannot make its own decisions and act against any party member. It is up to the CWC to study the committee’s recommendation and decide whether to suspend or expel a guilty party member.”
