KOTA KINABALU: Former Liverpool striker El Hadji Diouf has arrived in Kota Kinabalu and look set to join Sabah for the 2015 Malaysian Footbal League season.
The 33-year-old forward from Senegal who is among five foreign players eyeing four slots with the state team was greeted by coach and manager George O'Callaghan.
The others bidding to earn their place are Australian midfielder Mitrovic Srecko who played for the team last year, Brazilian defender Tales Dos Santos and strikers Eamon Zayed from Libya and Irish Roy O'Donovan.
Diouf will play a key role for Sabah in the Premier League next year as it harbour hopes to earn promotion to the Super League.
Diouf who was the African Player of the Year twice in 2002 and 2003 has been a key asset targeted by the Sabah FA to beef up the team which has reinstated its name as the Rhinos.
Apart from playing for Liverpool (2002-2005), Diouf played for Bolton Wanderers (2004-2008), Sunderland (2008-2009), Blackburn n (2009-2011) and Leeds United (2012-2014).
He also made 69 international appearances for Senegal and scored 21 goals.
