KUALA LUMPUR: The husband of a food trader was jailed a year for hitting his wife's neck when she refused to fund his drug habit.
Mohd Ariffin Sahak was today sentenced by magistrate Nurul'Ain Abdul Rahim when he pleaded guilty to hurting his wife of two-years, Noorlela Abdul Rani, during an argument at her food stall last Monday.
The quarrel was triggered when he sought RM50 from her while she was selling nasi lemak at the stall located alongside Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL), Jalan Raja Muda Abdul Aziz, Dang Wangi here, around 10.20am on Nov 17.
Noorlela, 49, had refused to hand over the money because Ariffin, 43, tended to squander it over recreational drugs.
During the argument he hit her on the neck, causing her to suffer neck pain.
The next day, the victim found that RM400 was missing from the couple's home at Medan Selera Damai, Jalan Batu Bata off Jalan Pekeliling here.
Suspecting her husband of stealing it, she lodged a police report.
Police arrested Ariffin on the same day and found that he had 13 previous convictions for various offences including drug-related ones.
Nurul'Ain ordered the accused the jail term to begin from yesterday, the date he was arrested.
Meanwhile in the same court, an out-of-work man was jailed five months after he pleaded guilty to injuring the ring finger of his son's right hand during an altercation over a missing handphone.
Hasnor Mohd Nor, 46, attacked complainant Mohamad Hafizie, 20, when the latter was busy searching for his missing handphone at their flat unit at Jalan Sungai Baru, Kampung Baru here, around 2.30pm, two days ago.
The accused had injured Hafizie with a dustpan while he was asking his grandmother Zainah Baba if she had seen the device.
Hasnor then swung a wooden chair against his son but missed.
He suddenly produced the handphone and handed it to his son before ordering the victim to leave the unit.
Hafizie immediately lodged a police report.
Nurul'Ain ordered the jail term to run from yesterday, the day Hasnor was arrested.
Deputy public prosecutor N. Joy Jothi prosecuted in both cases while none of the two accused were represented.
