Flood: Cops will monitor property

JOHOR BARU: THE police have assured flood victims who have been evacuated to relief centres that their homes will be monitored to prevent burglary and theft, said Johor police chief Datuk Mokhtar Shariff.

“So far, there has been no reports of house break-ins areas but I have instructed state district police chiefs to beef up security to prepare for eventualities,” said Mokhtar at a community event at the Johor police contingent headquarters recently.

He also assured flood victims that the police would set up mobile police booths at flood relief centres for security purposes.

Mokthar added that the National Security Council (NSC) has put the state police as the lead agency for flood operations in Johor.

Johor NSC assistant chief secretary Azura Muhammed Kifli said that they have making preparations over the last three to four months to face any eventualities.

“The preparations were made using a standard operating procedure to face extreme disaster.

“So, we are prepared for the worst but we hope things will improve,” said Azura.

She said the council had deployed its assets to the relevant agencies in the districts which are expected to be hit by floods.

“We have deployed boats to the Fire and Rescue Departments in Segamat, Muar and Ledang. We have even distributed portable toilets there to these districts,” she said.

The council had recently urged Johor residents to prepare for potential floods following adverse weather conditions in many states.

Based on the Malaysian Meteorological Department’s early warning, a heavy downpour is expected in the state until Wednesday.
