KUALA LUMPUR: Police nabbed two higher learning institution students who were about to leave for Syria to join Islamic State group last month.
The suspects, including a 27-year-old woman who got married to a IS fighter through Skype, were detained at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) by Special Branch's Counter-Terrorism Division (SB-CTD) operatives.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the female suspect, who studies at a private institution in the Klang Valley, was nabbed on Dec 24.
He said initial investigations revealed that the woman was influenced to sympathise with IS struggle after watching the group's propaganda video on YouTube.
"Police found that the suspect then started interacting with an IS fighter through Facebook since mid-November.
"The woman then got married to the Maghribi man through Skype application mid last month," he said in a statement.
Khalid said the IS fighter then coaxed his 'wife' to join him in Syria.
The second suspect, a 22-year-old male student of a public university in Perlis, was arrested in KLIA on Dec 28.
Khalid said initial investigations revealed that the suspect, who was also influenced after watching the group's videos on YouTube, has planned to involve in a suicide mission in Syria.
Both of them are being detained for suspicion of committing an offence under Chapter VI A (terrorism-related offences) of the Penal Code, and will be investigated under Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.
