PUTRAJAYA: The government has introduced a Rahmah Mobile Prepaid Package for secondary school leavers continuing their tertiary education in public institutions of higher learning.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the price of the package would not exceed RM30 for 30 gigabytes of data and a 180-day validity period.
He said the package would be offered to those in public universities and selected public skills training institutes.
Students can subscribe to the packages starting from Aug 16. The package would be offered by five telecommunications providers including CelcomDigi, Maxis, Telekom Malaysia, UMobile, and Yes.
"They can register for this through their telcos directly, and they will need their student or matriculation card to prove their identity," Fahmi said at the World Public Relations Day celebration here, today.
He clarified that the government was not spending any money to offer the package.
Fahmi said this was in line with the "Rahmah" concept introduced by the late Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, who was the then Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister.
"The government is paying nothing, this is in collaboration with the telco companies, who have been kind enough to agree to reduce the charges.
"The late Salahuddin said under the 'Rahmah' concept, the government does not spend, but these large telco companies will help cover the cost."
The public institutions of higher learning involved include all public universities, polytechnics, and community colleges nationwide.
