Floods: SOP under review for upgrade

KANGAR: The National Disaster Committee will review the Flood Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure implementation matches the model of advanced countries.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department cum National Disaster Committee chairman, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said it would be based on the overall views of all parties involved in the massive floods recently.

“The committee’s decision will not be based on one or two views but of all parties, namely the people, victims, volunteers, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and government agencies,” he said.

He was met after presenting compassionate aid to 435 flood victims in Perlis here, today. Each family received RM500.

Shahidan said it was important in the SOPs to ensure each person directed to evacuate should relocate when an order had been issued as it was found many did not adhere to such directives during the massive floods in

“In countries like Japan, the people will relocate as soon as an order is issued and will only return when allowed to do so. This will help reduce accidents and loss of lives,” he added.

He said flood simulation training for government officers including security forces would be conducted about six months before the flood season at the end of the year.--BERNAMA
