SEREMBAN: Enforcement of the Copyright Act 197 and Trade Descriptions (Option Disc Label) Order 2010 will be intensified to combat local copyright activities.
Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hasan Malek said between January and June this year, 70 cases amounting to RM3.5 million was recorded and 68 were arrested.
Hasan said a special task force had been set up to fight against these activities, which he said would kill the creativity of innovation development.
“The special task force is responsible to carry out enforcement, education or cultivate awareness.
“The task force is made up of various enforcement agencies, members from entertainment industry, electronic media digital, print and non-government organisations,” he said after breaking fast with media here at Palm Mall here on Thursday night.
Hasan said the biggest challenge in combating piracy was the illegal download through digital media.
“However, I am confident with the cooperation of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and Cyber Security Malaysia, which also part of the task force, the ministry will able to overcome the challenge.
“Collaboration from all parties can make sure the creative industry continues to grow and piracy is eradicated,” he said.
He admitted that piracy was a long exist issue in the country and explained that most of the pirate products were being smuggled in the country through the country’s border.
