MCMC temporarily blocked access to Sarawak Report

CYBERJAYA: The Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has temporarily blocked access to Sarawak Report.

The commission said today this was because the news blog had published content which could threaten national security.

The content, MCMC said in a statement, was unverified and touched on ongoing investigations, adding that the decision was made after it had received several complaints from the public.

“(Blocking access to the website) was done under sections 211 and 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and will be continue until the special taskforce (jointly headed by the attorney-general, inspector-general of police, Bank Negara governor and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner) has completed its investigations,” said the statement.

The commission reminded the public to be careful when sharing information in social media websites, especially information which had not been verified, as this could be false.

Such “information”, it said, could threaten the peace and economic stability of the country.

The commission urged those with information on websites with such content to forward complaints to aduanskmm@cmc.gov.my.
