PETALING JAYA: Two teens with identical names drowned during an outing at a lake at Taman Tasik Prima in Puchong this afternoon.
The incident took place at 3.30 pm after the two teens together with six others decided to go for a swim after their Friday prayers.
Ten-year-old Muhammad Amirul Irfan Mohd Rashid or better known as Irfan got into difficulties in the water, when 14-year-old Muhammad Amirul Irfan Mohd Sabri or known as Amirul jumped in to save his younger friend.
However, the older teen also got into difficulties as well and could not save his younger namesake.
Puchong Fire and Rescue Station chief operation commander Mohd Hisham Mat Yasih said the department received a call at 4.20pm and arrived at the scene 10 minutes later. They deployed 26 personnel to search for the two teens.
"Six members of the scuba unit of the Water Rescue Team (PPDA) from Shah Alam and Port Klang were also moved to the scene to search for the bodies," he said.
He added that the PPDA found the body of Irfan some three hours after the search began.
"We managed to retrieve the body at 7.22pm. The team spent 12 minutes under water before they found him.
"The victim was found about 10 metres away from the lake jetty," Hisham said.
The victim was identified as Amirul.
He adds that they will continue their efforts to locate the other teen’s body.
"If we find it difficult, we will continue searching in the morning at 8am (tomorrow)," he said.
Parents and relatives of the two victims who were at the scene of the incident were overcome with emotion as the first victim was retrieved from the lake.
The found body was sent to the Serdang hospital for post-mortem.
