Selangor Symphony Orchestra inaugural concert on Nov 21

SHAH ALAM: A new homegrown professional orchestra, Selangor Symphony Orchestra (SSO) will perform its inaugural concert, featuring 76 musicians, on Nov 21, 8.30pm.

Led by SSO founder, music director and conductor Eugene Pook, the concert will feature 76 musicians in a one and a half hour show at the Jubli Perak Auditorium, Selangor state secretariat building.

Royal Highness Princess of Selangor Tengku Zatashah Idris, who is the patron for SSO, will be attending the concert.

Organising it for the very first time, the concert’s aim is to establish a professional orchestra for Selangor and serve as a platform to cultivate young musicians’ interest in classical music.

Pook said the concert is also a way to give back to the community who has helped the musicians flourish.

He said SSO was formed in April this year with the objective to build a domestic platform to feature professional musicians in the country.

"Back in 2007, while studying in the United States, I had the idea to set up an orchestra. It my long-awaited dream come true. After returning home in 2010, I started to scout for local talents.

"Arts is essential to a nation as it creates an environment that blends background, ethnicity and culture," he said at a press conference today, held at KDU University College in Glenmarie.

"I would like to thank to all my sponsors, including Paramount Corporation Bhd (PCB), Shah Alam Concorde Hotel and TicketCharge, who had helped in promoting and supporting our young musicians,” said Pook.

He believes that the formation of SSO is a step in the right direction, especially for upcoming young musicians in Malaysia.

Besides holding the concert, Pook added that the profits of the tickets will go to Selangor Symphony Society fund.

Tickets are priced from RM34 to RM84 via TicketCharge at www.ticketcharge.com or 03-9222 8811.
