JOHOR BARU: The Tunku Laksamana Johor Tunku Abdul Jalil Iskandar Sultan Ibrahim was laid to rest at the Royal Mausoleum at the Mahmoodiah Muslim Cemetary here at about 3.10 pm this afternoon.
The last rites for Tunku Abdul Jalil was performed by Johor Islamic Religious Council (MAIJ) advisor Datuk Noh Gadut.
A crowd had gathered at the cemetary when the royal hearse carrying the remains of Tunku Abdul Jalil arrived at 2pm after a three-kilometre procession from Istana Besar.
A brief downpour did not deter those who were present to witness the ceremony.
The Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar had earlier led the processsion which carried the royal hearse bearing his son's remains.
Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail and Tunku Temenggong Johor Tunku Idris had accompanied Tunku Abdul Jalil's remains in the royal hearse.
Their brother Tunku Panglima Johor Tunku Abdul Rahman and other male relatives in the royal family also accompanied the royal hearse.
Other royalty and dignitaries followed behind the royal hearse, which was pulled by 20 men.
Scores of people lined the route where the royal hearse passed through in Jalan Ayer Molek.
Tunku Abdul Jalil passed away at the royal ward of Sultanah Aminah Hospital at 7.11 pm last night. He was 25.
The fourth of six siblings, Tunku Jalil has been living with stage four liver cancer after he was diagnosed with the illness late last year.
The news of his death was announced by the Johor Council of the Royal Court president, Datuk Abdul Rahim Ramli, yesterday.
Tunku Abdul Jalil was diagnosed with liver cancer late last year and underwent a liver transplant on Dec 10, 2014 at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun-Yat-Sen University in Guandong, China.
His illness led Sultan Ibrahim to set up the Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Foundation, which helps cancer patients in need of treatment and financial aid.
Tunku Abdul Jalil, who was born on July 5, 1990, was trained by the police's Special Action Unit and holds the rank of Inspector.
He was known for his love of wildlife and animals. He was once a volunteer zookeeper in the Singapore Zoo for a year and the London Zoo for two years.
The new mosque at the Johor police headquarters was named after him.
Tunku Abdul Jalil received his early education at Sekolah Sri Utama Johor Baru and then later at the Yayasan Pendidikan Johor (YPJ) Zaikarim Johor Baru International School.
He is a degree holder in Zoological and Conservation Studies from a university in the United Kingdom
