KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Daim Zainuddin was laid to rest at Bukit Kiara Muslim Cemetery at 6.06pm today.
His remains were brought to the cemetery at 5pm following the funeral prayers at Federal Territory Mosque earlier in the day.
Family, friends, and dignitaries gathered to pay their respects to the former finance minister.
The talqin recitation was led by Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan senior imam Muhamad Afandi Che Harun, who prayed for the statesman's soul to be placed among the righteous.
Speaking to the press after the funeral, Daim's wife, Toh Puan Na'imah Abdul Khaled requested some time before issuing an official statement to the media.
She said that the family needed some time as they were still grieving the loss of Allahyarham.
"We will release an official statement later; this is a difficult time for our family.
"Thank you for the support and prayers of Malaysians for Allahyarham.
"We are but humble beings in the eyes of Allah and are not free from making mistakes.
"Please continue to pray that Allahyarham's soul is placed among the righteous," she said.
Daim passed away earlier this morning at the age of 86.
The businessman-turned-politician served as finance minister from 1984 to 1991 and again from 1998 to 2001. Originally from Alor Star, Kedah, Daim also served as a Member of Parliament for five terms between 1982 and 2004.
In 1984, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad appointed him finance minister, two years after he was first elected as an MP.
In 2018, Daim and other party veterans who supported Dr Mahathir in opposing then-prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak were sacked from Umno. Following the change of government, Daim led the Council of Eminent Persons, a group tasked with advising the new administration during its first 100 days.
