ALOR STAR: Bakar Bata assemblyman Datuk Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah will be sworn in as Kedah's 12th Menteri Besar tomorrow.
This is following Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir's resignation as Menteri Besar (MB) this morning.
Kedah state secretary Datuk Bakar Din said Regency Council has consented for Bashah to be appointed as MB.
"I would like to announce Air Hitam assemblyman Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir has relinquished his position as MB on Feb 3.
"In accordance to the Laws of the Constitution of Kedah, a new MB has been chosen to replace Mukhriz.
"Following the Regency Council's consent, it is hereby informed Senator Bashah will be appointed as MB at the Istana Anak Bukit at 10am tomorrow," he said in a press conference at Wisma Darul Aman here today.
Bashah, 66, has been touted as the "frontrunner" to replace Mukhriz as Kedah Menteri Besar.
In fact, Bashah had been the state Barisan Nasional (BN) election director in 2013, when BN won back the state from the hands of Pas.
Bashah won his seat with a narrow 895 majority over PKR's Mohd Eekmal Ahmad.
He is currently the state Umno liaison committee deputy chairman as well as Deputy Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister.
Bashah has been active in politics since the 1980s, as Alor Star Umno Youth division chief, Deputy Alor Star Umno division chief, and also state Umno liaison committee chairman.
