KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) is in discussion with the Malacca government to open an aviation museum in Klebang, Malacca.
Its chief Tan Sri Roslan Saad said the RMAF had discussed the plan with the government and they are waiting for a decision to be made.
“Currently, we have several aircraft including the Rajawali and Skyhawk placed at the transportation museum in the Melaka International Trade Centre in Ayer Keroh, so it is a good idea to build a museum specifically for the RMAF.
“That way, we could place the (retired) aircraft as our heritage and it could educate the public on how it was used on their roles and their missions to serve the country,” said Roslan.
He was speaking to reporters at the celebration of the RMAF museum's 30th anniversary.
Roslan said the museum, which is currently located at the Sungai Besi airbase, would be moved to another area once RMAF’s new air base is completed in 2017.
“The plan is to maintain the museum in Kuala Lumpur as a heritage site…After all, this was the country's first international airport during the 1950s and 1960s.
"The tower is still there, the arrival and departure sites are still there – it will be a historical site,” he said.
