Amar Singh is the new KL police chief

KUALA LUMPUR: The city today officially gets a new police chief in a duty handover ceremony between Datuk Tajudin Md Isa and Datuk Amar Singh Ishar Singh.

Amar, who was the deputy director of federal police Criminal Investigation Department (CID), is the first Sikh officer to hold the KL police chief post.

He replaces Tajudin, who is going to the federal police Commercial Crime Investigation Department as its deputy director, effective today.

In his speech during the ceremony at the city police headquarters earlier today, Amar said his appointment was an honour to the minority races in Malaysia, especially Sikhs who make up only 0.16 per cent of the police force's manpower.

"This also proves that the force's leadership are colourblind in promoting its officers as well as in executing our duties," he said.

The handing over of duty was witnessed by Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Noor Rashid Ibrahim.

Amar, 58, started his career in Ipoh district police headquarters' CID after completing the Assistant Superintendent Cadet police basic training in 1983.

The Bachelor of Science Degree and Law Bachelor Degree holder then rose up the ranks, with stints in Johor Baru and Klang district police headquarters, as well as the commandant of Police Training Centre in Jalan Semarak, here, among others.
