No fake Similac infant formula in Malaysia, says Health Ministry

PUTRAJAYA: The Health Ministry today confirmed that Malaysia only imports the popular infant formula 'Similac' only from Singapore, Ireland and Spain.

Health Director-General Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the fake version of the formula was only sold in the China local market, and the formula was not exported to other countries, including Malaysia.

"US-based Abbott Laboratories and Beingmate have also verified that the fake milk issue only involves its company in China for its local market only," he said in a statement.

Last week, Chinese authorities arrested six people for making and selling the fake infant formula and marketing the counterfeit product across seven provinces, a Shanghai government body said.

Abbott, in a statement said the case came to light in December and the fake goods had been traced and seized by the end of last year.

The case is the latest scandal involving food safety in China.

In 2008, several infants died and thousands fell ill because of baby milk powder tainted by a chemical additive, driving parents to seek out foreign brands of infant formula.
