KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has re-pledged to reduce 45 per cent of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission by 2030 to address climate change and global warming.
Federal Department of Town and Country Planning (FDTCP) director-general Datuk Dr Dolbani Mijan said the new pledge was driven by encouraging results, with a reduction of 33 per cent, seen between 2005 till last year.
“In 2009, the government had declared voluntary reduction of 40 per cent in terms of emission intensity by the year 2020, as compared to the 2005 level.
“However, we discovered that we have already achieved 33 per cent by 2015 and we are confident to reach 40 per cent by 2020 and are now positive to set a higher target” he told reporters at The International Symposium on Low Carbon Development in Asia 2016 here today.
He said it was important for Malaysia to achieve the target since the country was one of the highest producing CO2 emission among Asian countries, after Singapore and Brunei. -- Bernama
