KUALA LUMPUR: LEE Chong Wei will regain his World No 1 ranking on Thursday after he reached the final of the Indonesia Open in Jakarta today.
The 34-year-old defeated World No 29 Ihsan Maulana Mustofa of Indonesia 21-9, 21-18 in the semi-finals in only 39 minutes.
The Malaysian plays Dane Jan O Jorgensen, who defeated China’s Tian Houwei 21-14, 18-21, 21-17.
Chong Wei lost his World No 1 ranking in December, 2014 following an eight-month long doping suspension. He had failed a urine test at the World Championships in August that year.
Meanwhile, sixth seeds Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi reached the men’s doubles final in the Yonex Sunrise Vietnam International Challenge in Hanoi after a 21-14, 23-21 victory over Taiwan’s Liao Kuan Hao-Lu Chia Pin in Hanoi today.
The Malaysians play Japan’s Kenya Mitsuhashi-Yuta Watanabe, who edged Taiwan’s Chang Ko Chi-Wei Liang Jui 17-21, 21-13, 21-16, in the other semi-finals.
