PM Najib: Respect due process on 1MDB probe

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will give its full cooperation to international parties investigating issues surrounding 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

"The government views the recent statement by the United States Justice Department on 1MDB seriously," he said, noting that the issue constituted a civil action and not a criminal one.

He said due process must be respected and that those named have a chance to defend themselves, including in court.

"We should not jump to conclusions before the process is completed.

"We don't want anyone to misunderstand the government's principle. Good governance is something that we always strive for," he told reporters at Felda's Hari Raya Aidilfiri celebration today.

On his stepson Riza Aziz being mentioned in the Justice Department's report, Najib said: "Like anybody else, he has his rights, so allow the process to take its course."

On the supposedly missing funds from the strategic development company, Najib said it was important for the facts to be established.

"We need to establish the facts first. This is not a criminal action, thus the people involved will have their say through the court process in the United States."

The prime minister gave his assurance that diplomatic ties between the United States and Malaysia would not be affected by the investigation.
