KUCHING: Sarawakians from all walks of life gathered at the Kuching Waterfront here today commemorate the state’s inaugural Sarawak Day celebration.
Among those present were the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud and wife, Toh Puan Raghad Kurdi Taib, Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem and wife Puan Sri Jamilah Anu, parliament ministers and state cabinet ministers.
The audience was treated to special performances and montages on the history of Sarawak.
In April, the chief minister had declared July 22 as a public holiday to commemorate Sarawak's independence from British colonisation.
The decision was made to recognise and acknowledge the sacrifices and contributions of its ancestors who had fought for Sarawak's independence from the British.
Members of the state’s Opposition parties were also invited to the event.
Adenan in his speech said, they (opposition parties) were invited as they are also a part of Sarawak despite having different views in politics.
