DBKL seeks cooperation of schools, parents to stop hawking outside school compound

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is seeking the cooperation of schools and parents to stop hawkers selling snacks and drinks outside the school compound.

Its senior deputy director (Licensing and Hawker’s Development), Datuk Ibrahim Yusoff said all quarters, especially the school management and parents, should cooperate to address the problem.

He said this in response to media reports on traders operating outside school compound whose presence could bring more harm to students.

Ibrahim said despite various actions taken by DBKL, the traders returned to operate.

“DBKL prohibits petty traders from operating outside school compound. Those caught doing so will be imposed compound of RM300 and their goods will be seized.

“We have been doing that, but after two or three days, they are back there. It is not that we (DBKL) have taken stern action, but the traders are stubborn,” he added.

Meanwhile, chairman of the National Parents-Teacher Association (PIBGN) Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Ali Hassan said schools should educate students on the dangers of consuming junk food normally sold by traders outside the school compound. -- Bernama
