PENGKALAN HULU: A 32-year-old police constable has been remanded for four days to assist an investigation into an incident where a primary school teacher was injured while being arrested last week.
Magistrate Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani granted the remand order after police made the application in chambers here today.
State Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Gan Tian Kee confirmed that the suspect was from the Lenggong police station and had joined the force in 2003.
Last night, state police chief Datuk Seri Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the policeman who allegedly injured the teacher in Lenggong during an arrest on Aug 30, whom he mistook as a drug addict, had been arrested.
The arrest came after netizens shared the story and related video, which has since gone viral on social media.
The teacher from Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Sapi Lenggong broke his arm when he was allegedly arrested by two plainclothes policemen.
In the 20-second video clip, the teacher had several times said that policemen had caught the wrong person.
However, he was overpowered and handcuffed by the policemen.
Based on the information shared by netizens, the incident happened when the teacher was on his way home after giving tuition to his pupils who are sitting for the UPSR (Primary School Assessment Test).
Rahim said police had classified the case as voluntarily causing grievous hurt, under Section 325 of the Penal Code.
The offence carries a maximum of seven years' jail and fine.
