KUALA LUMPUR: National para athletes continued to do the nation proud at the Rio Paralympics with long jumper Abdul Latif Romly delivering Malaysia's third gold of the games in a commanding performance today.
Latif broke his own world record three times en route to winning the men's long jump T20 (intellectual disability) event at the Olympic Stadium.
Latif fouled his first jump but immediately broke the world record on his second attempt with a leap of 7.47 metres, erasing the former mark of 7.35m which he achieved at the World Championships in Doha last year as well as the Paralympic record of 7.25 set by Jose Antonio Exposito Pineiro (Spain) in 2012.
He again bettered the record with a 7.54m effort on his third attempt. Latif could only manage 6.79m on his fourth but bounced back strongly with a third record of 7.60m in the fifth and 7.49m in the final round.
Croatian Zoran Talic and Ukraine's Dmytro Prudnikov finished a distant second and third on 7.12m and 6.99m respectively.
Ridzuan Mohamad Puzi and Ziyad Zolkefli had delivered two gold for Malaysia on yesterday.
Ridzuan won the nation's first ever Paralympic gold after winning the men's 100m T36 (cerebral palsy) sprint in a time of 12.07 seconds, a new Paralympic record.
Ziyad broke the world record twice en route to winning the men's shot put F20 (intellectual disability) with a final throw of 16.84m.
