KUALA LUMPUR: Pas Youth (DPPM) has condemned the DAP, saying it has shown its true colours by not rebuking or disagreeing with Jelutong Member of Parliament Jeff Ooi following his comment on the death of Pas spiritual leader Datuk Dr Haron Din.
Ooi had angered netizens when he wrote on Twitter: "Adios (good bye) Harun Din. Let there be peace" – implying his distaste for the Pas leader.
Pas Youth information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said the comment, and lack of condemnation, reflects badly on the DAP, demonstrating that it is ill-disposed towards religious leaders who are not in line with their ideology of secular struggle.
"Bear in mind that this is not the first time Ooi has been rude.
"In 2013, he insulted Penang Municipal Council staff by calling them 'kucing kurap' (insignificant and half-baked), for which he was rebuked by the late Karpal Singh during a state DAP ordinary convention," said Ahmad Fadhli in a statement today.
Citing another example, he said Ooi had previously remarked that Malays "showed their middle fingers at their rulers..." when referring to the 2009 Perak constitutional crisis.
Ahmad Fadhli demanded that Ooi apologize to Haron's family for uttering such words at a most inappropriate time.
"It is not enough for Ooi to delete the statement on Twitter, he must make an apology to family members of the late Haron to show that he truly regrets what he said and is sincere in retracting his statement," he said.
Ooi has since deleted the Tweet and insisted he did not meant to insult, but he has yet to apologise.
Haron passed away due to heart complications at Stanford University Hospital, the United States, yesterday. He was 76.
It is learnt that Haron left for the US several days ago to get further treatment for his heart problem.
Due to his critical condition, Haron was admitted to the intensive care unit and was on life support.
Last March, he was admitted to the National Heart Institute after complaining of chest pains.
In April 2012, Haron had undergone heart bypass surgery at the same hospital in San Francisco.
He was buried at the Five Pillars Muslim Cemetery in Livermore, California today (Friday in the US).
