SCOTTISH DJ, record producer and singer-songwriter Calvin Harris’ latest single, My Way, has been making waves not just for its deep groove.
The uptempo tropical house banger of a track, which was released last Friday, has so far climbed to No. 16 on Billboard’s US Hot Dance/Electronic Songs music chart. But fans have taken to Twitter to voice the popular opinion that the lyrical content, sung by Harris himself, is a swipe at fellow singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, whom Harris split from in May after 15 months of dating.
The beautiful songstress has been known to pen tunes about her ex-boyfriends, such as Dear John written about John Mayer and Style about Harry Styles.
But the 32-year-old Harris, whose real name is Adam Richard Wiles, had a more mundane explanation for his lyrics.
In an interview on an American radio show, the Grammy-nominated artiste, who is listed as the highest earning DJ in the world, said that the song wasn’t about leaving a bad relationship at all.
It was about an ode to the time when he left his dead-end supermarket job to pursue his dream of making music.
The multi-instrumentalist has been releasing songs since 2002 at the age of 18. He has, to date, released four studio albums: I Created Disco (2007), Ready For The Weekend (2009), 18 Months (2012) and Motion (2014).
Known for club hits like I’m Not Alone, Feel So Close, Summer and more recently, This Is What You Came For (feat. Rihanna), Harris has also written songs for Kylie Minogue, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Mary J. Blige, Cheryl Cole and Rita Ora.
The currently in-demand DJ has toured with Groove Armada, Deadmau5, Skrillex, Tiesto and Rihanna.
During the same interview, Harris also added that his tracks are not autobiographical.
“For me personally, that’s not really my vibe. I’m not an autobiographical singer, I’m very vague with my messages,” he said.
