Bomb hoax interrupts classes for 1,500 students at Sungai Petani school

ALOR STAR: Classes for some 1,500 students of SMK Bakar Arang in Sungai Petani were abruptly suspended by a bomb threat, which turned out to be a hoax, this afternoon.

Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Md Zukir Isa said that the Bomb Disposal Unit and the Canine Unit (K-9) were immediately deployed to the school after receiving a distress call at 12.30pm from a school teacher, informing them that they had received a bomb threat from a woman.

"According to the teacher, one of her colleagues received a call from a woman who claimed that an explosive device had been placed in the school.

"Following a thorough inspection by the units, however, no explosive was found,” said Zukir.

He added that students and teachers were ordered to assemble at the school field for about an hour and a half as the inspection took place.

According to Zukir, the principal of the school has lodged a police report on the matter and the case is being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to two years upon conviction.
