KUALA LUMPUR: Consumers can still enjoy cooking oil subsidy by buying the 1kg polybag pack, the Parliament heard today.
Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said it is therefore unfair to accuse the government of having removed all subsidies on cooking oil.
"It is a rationalisation exercise to ensure that target groups can still get subsidised cooking oil," he said in reply to a query from Datuk Seri Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz (BN-Tanah Merah) during Minister's Question Time.
Hamzah said he has directed his ministry's enforcement officers to conduct regular checks on traders to ensure that they do not indiscriminately raise the price of the 1kg polybag pack.
He said consumers who want to buy cooking oil in amounts greater than 1kg will have to pay the market price.
"Even so, (this constitutes little) additional spending," he said.
