TNB: Water authorities should upgrade gensets, keep plants running for future maintenance works

KUALA LUMPUR: Water authorities must take the initiative to upgrade their back-up electrical generators (gensets) in order to avoid water supply disruption for electrical maintenance works in the future at the plants.

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) chief corporate officer Datuk Wira Roslan Ab Rahman said the suggestion would be discussed with water authorities to minimise the impact of electrical maintenance works. A fine example is the upcoming six-day water disruption in Klang Valley that begins tomorrow.

The onus to have gensets with the right capacity is on water authorities such as Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) and Syarikat Pengeluaran Air Sungai Selangor Sdn Bhd (SPLASH).

Roslan said that the existing gensets at the water treatment plants do not have the capacity to provide sufficient power to keep plants running, which explains the water disruption.

"TNB will work with water authorities in an effort to upgrade their gensets, to avoid water supply disruptions during our triennial maintenance work," he said told reporters at TNB headquarters here today.

In a statement earlier today, TNB Corporate Affairs and Communications senior general manager Datuk Ir Mohd Aminuddin Mohd Amin said the shutdown of Bukit Badong substation in Hulu Selangor which begins tomorrow must be carried out to enable necessary maintenance work.

He said the 16-hour maintenance work could not be postponed any further as any delay would affect the electricity supply in the long run.
