Ipoh police net over 300 Mat Rempit for illegal racing in New Year op

IPOH: More than 300 Mat Rempit were arrested by police in a major operation at Jalan Pasir Puteh here early this morning.

All the detained, including pillion riders, were allegedly involved in illegal racing.

The 4.15am operation was carried out in conjunction with New Year's celebrations.

According to a source, the police arrested 375 men and 11 women, including 53 students.

''They were arrested after the Ipoh District Police Headquarters Investigation and Traffic Enforcement Division cordoned off the Jalan Pasir Puteh intersection, near Taman Shantin.

''The police cordoned off the four roads at the traffic light intersection, causing all the Mat Rempit to be trapped,'' said the source when met at the operation location.

The arrested Mat Rempit were then ordered to push their motorcycles for about seven kilometres to the Ipoh Traffic Enforcement Unit at Jalan Chamberlain Hulu for documentation.

''As of 9am today, the documentation process and summons issuance is ongoing.

“Two men were detained, as they were riding an allegedly stolen motorcycle.

''A few traffic offences were recorded, such as lack of licences and road tax payments, as well as illegal modifications made to machines,'' he said.

Ipoh police chief Assistant Commissioner Sum Chang Keong is currently holding a press conference on the large arrest of Mat Rempit.
