WCE to tackle 'mat rempit' issue with police

KUALA LUMPUR: West Coast Expressway Sdn Bhd (WCESB) says it takes safety issues on the expressway seriously, particularly regarding the activities of "mat rempit" (illegal street racers).

Its chief operating officer Syed Muhd Naguib Syed Mohd said the company was ready to collaborate with police and other agencies in an effort to reduce the activities of illegal street racers on the WCE.

"We are always ready to provide full support to the police in their operations to ensure the safety of highway users," he said.

According to a Harian Metro report, the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway, North-South Expressway and Kajang-Seremban Highway were among the locations frequently chosen by illegal street racers previously.

Federal Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said his team has also identified several other locations frequented by illegal motorcycle racers, including the Federal Highway, WCE, and East Coast Expressway (LPT2).

He said 2,241 arrests have been made nationwide for illegal street racing activities.

He added that police have outlined several measures to help reduce illegal motorcycle racing activities and enhance safety on the WCE.

Among this was the installation of surveillance cameras at key locations along the WCE to monitor any suspicious activities.

The second measure involves conducting regular patrols, while a third is to run road safety awareness campaigns to educate highway users about the dangers of illegal street racing and the importance of following traffic regulations.
